India locks horns against New Zealand at Nottingham on 13th June in the 18th match of World Cup 2019. Both these teams are unbeaten in the league stage of the World Cup so far although these are early days yet and the teams are not fully tested so far. New Zealand has always found themselves to be underrated in almost all world cup events. Remember this team has played the highest number of semi-finals in World Cup history; the same as Australia; the 5 times champions. Indians, on the other hand, have a great WC record with 2 titles to their credit and a victory against defending champions Australia must have boosted their confidence sky high.
New Zealand Team Preparations
The New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is definitely one of the better batsmen in the world and his leadership style is different than his predecessor Brandon McCullum. Ross Taylor is an old pro and has been even more consistent than Williamson in the last few years. Taylor has smacked 15 fifties and five centuries in last 3 years and this probably is the last World Cup for the New Zealand batsman. He is not going to go out lying down and will be rearing to have a go at the Indians. The opening partner for Martin Guptill is to be decided between Colin Munro and Henry Nicholls. One slight worry for the Kiwis is the form of the all-rounder Colin Grandhomme with the bat. New Zealand gave a solid performance against Afghanistan with bowlers James Neesham and Lockie Ferguson dominating the proceeding taking 5 and 4 wickets respectively to bundle out the opposition. Although the openers fell early in the run chase the experienced pair of Williamson and Taylor ensured that there was no drama and New Zealand registered their 3rd victory in a row.
India Team Preparations
India has gradually emerged as a cricketing power in this century with consistent performances all across the globe. They are one of the favorites for this title as well along with England. Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as a top bowler for them in the last couple of years. There are many questions asked about his bowling action and how he can last on the high-pressure international scene for long by using that action. The 23-year-old quick is an exceptional talent and he will no doubt be the go-to bowler for Virat Kohli. Their top 3 batsmen Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli are 3 of the most feared batsmen in world cricket. The openers complement each other well as they did against Australia. They are followed by the best batsmen in the world Virat Kohli. The middle order is powered by MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav, and Vijay Shankar. Hardik Pandya is developing into a good finisher for team India and will surely be the main finisher when the mercurial Dhoni retires. Yazuvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are two of the best spinners in the world and they will be the main threat against Kiwis.
These are the top two teams of the world cup so far. Both these teams have been winning the sparring contests in the early stages of the tournament. But India has been winning against better teams than the Kiwis and that together with the fact that India has an extremely powerful batting lineup up front which is extremely difficult to dislodge makes India the favorites to win the match.
