Kiwis crushed India by 80 runs in the opening T20I match between the two countries. A swashbuckling 84 by Tim Seifert was the main reason for the New Zealand victory after the ODI series defeat against the Asian giants. When asked to bat they made a massive 219 for 6 as Seifert played his career-best knock hitting six sixes and seven fours. In response, India was bundled for 139 with 4 balls to spare. It was a below-par performance by the Indians as they slumped to their worst ever defeat in T20I.
New Zealand Team Preparations
Seifert’s previous best score in T20I was 14. He was promoted to open for the kiwis along with Colin Monroe who also contributed with a 34 off 20 balls. The pair hammered 86 runs in 8.2 overs thereby providing a whirlwind start to the New Zealand innings. The partnership set the tone for a massive total. Surprisingly it was spinners who were on top of the Indian batting lineup and gave them the most trouble. Both Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner bowled well taking 2 wickets apiece. New Zealand will probably keep the same side for the second match as it is a winning combination.
India Team Preparations
After the hiding in the opener, Indians will be keen to bounce back in the series and you can expect some changes especially in the bowling department. Kuldeep Yadav is likely to come back in the side Khaleel Ahmad might get replaced as well. The batting failure in the opening match must have hurt the India team which was flying high at that moment. They take pride in being the world’s best chasers but it rarely showed in the first match as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
I expect the Indian team to bounce back after the humiliating defeat in the first match. They are sure to come out all guns blazing and they have plenty. I will not write off the kiwi challenge though as they are tough fighters and if given a chance they will prove that. But all-in-all I think I will go with India for the second T20I.
India, New Zealand.
